Young men who have been away, been to war, they are different when they come home.

The tragedy of modern war is that the young men die fighting each other - instead of their real enemies back home in the capitals.

Revenge by young men is considered gain, even at the cost of their own lives, but old men who stay at home in times of war, and mothers who have sons to lose, know better.

Britain fought the second world war with men and money partly drawn from the empire and that, after the defence of the home islands, the survival of the empire was a fundamental war aim.

The audience, those at home in wartime, were not 'citizens' or 'people.' They were 'customers.'
